Will Drinking A Bottle Of Wine Get You Drunk?

If you are anything like me, you open a bottle of wine thinking you will have a glass or two and the next thing you know it is gone. I certainly feel a bit tipsy but am i legally drunk? How many beers or shots does a bottle of wine equal.

The big question is, will drinking a bottle of wine get you drunk?

Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

A bottle of wine contains 5 standard glasses of wine at 5fl oz or 150ml each. The CDC states it takes the average 160lb adult male, 4 standard wines to get drunk. Therefore drinking a whole bottle of wine which is 5 glasses should get most people drunk.

How do all these numbers stack up, read on for more information.

How big is a glass of wine?

When i pour a glass of wine it can be a little too big. Ive a few red wine glasses that take the entire bottle!

My wife never likes to see the glass too full so she gets little and often on the pour but what is the official version?

The CDC state the standard glass of wine is 5fl oz which equates to 150ml. This does not mean this is the standard serving you will get in a bar but it means you can compare it to other standard alcoholic drinks.

What other sizes of glasses of wine are there?

Just because a standard glass of wine is 5fl oz or 150ml, that doesn’t mean that is what you will get served in a bar or restaurant.

You may well come across “small” and “large” on a menu, generally this will mean 4fl oz or 6fl oz in the USA and 125ml or 175ml in the UK.

Prosecco, Champagne and other sparkling wines may well be served at the smaller size of 4fl oz or 125ml.

A standard serving or the very sweet dessert wine is likely to be 2fl oz. I do enjoy a dessert wine but can you imagine drinking a 6fl oz+ glass in one go? That is a lot of sugar.

How many glasses of wine are in a bottle?

If you have a few friends over you might want to divide up the bottle but just how far should a bottle of wine stretch? How many glasses of wine should you get from a bottle?

If a standard glass of wine is 150ml or 5fl oz and a bottle of wine has 750ml, that means there are 5 standard glasses of wine in a bottle.

How many glasses of wine equals a beer?

Alcoholic drinks come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, flavours and strengths. You would think it would be impossible to compare wines to beers and across to a spirit.

Luckily the USDA and CDC have devised a list of “standard” alcoholic drinks. Each one contains the exact same amount of alcohol – 14g of alcohol (0.6 ounces).

Below is a list of the standard drinks, volumes and ABV that all give 14g of alcohol.

Drink and volumeAlcohol content
12fl oz Beer5%
5fl oz Wine12%
1.5fl oz Spirit40%
Standard drinks

This means you can quickly tell how many wines you have had compared to a beers of even shots.

A standard 12fl oz 5% beer equals a standard 5fl oz 12% glass of wine.

How many glasses of wine equals a shot?

This shouldn’t be hard math for anyone. A standard shot, glass of wine and can of beer are all equal to each other and all have the same 14g of pure alcohol.

A standard 5fl oz 12% glass of wine equals one standard 1.5fl oz 40% shot of spirit.

What is the definition of being drunk?

We need to know how to scientifically judge what “drunk” is under the law. It needs to be a bit more precise than not walking too straight.

A blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% is classed as legally intoxicated in the US.

So now, we now need to see how many standard drinks would get your BAC to 0.08%.

How many glasses of wine to get drunk?

The CDC states it takes the average 160lb adult male, 4 standard wines to get drunk. A standard glass of wine is 5fl oz and 12% ABV. The 4 wines have to be drank over 1-2 hours. If you are a female or lighter then it will take less wine, if you are a significantly heavier male, it may take 5+ glasses of wine to get drunk.

You can follow all my math in this article

Will drinking a bottle of wine get you drunk?

If it only takes 4 glasses of wine to get the average adult drunk and there are 5 glasses of wine in a bottle, then drinking the whole bottle would be enough to get most people drunk.
