UNLTD. Non Alcoholic IPA Review. Lowest calorie beer.

What type of beer is UNLTD.?

UNLTD. is an IPA

Unless you are very new to the beer world or only buy pints of lager, you will have had an IPA.

IPA stands for India Pale Ale. Ales are distinct from lagers in that they are top fermented and warmer temperatures with a different yeast. An IPA will be a more hop forward ale with various notes of citrus, pine or tropical, depending on what hops are used.

There are more and more varieties of IPA such as…

  • West coast
  • New England
  • Black
  • English
  • Double
  • Triple

Is UNLTD. really alcohol free?

The UK Gov and US, state that only beers with an ABV of <0.05% can be called alcohol free.

You will see from the picture tho that UNLTD. is called alcohol free with an ABV of 0.5% I would guess they are using EU laws that allow up to 0.5% to be called alcohol free and not just merely non alcoholic. Clear as mud, eh?

Anything 0.5% ABV and below is definitely non alcoholic tho in whatever language.

A glass of orange juice will likely have a higher ABV so i wouldn’t get overly worked up over 0.05% vs 0.5%

You can read my entire article on how to tell how much alcohol is in a non alcoholic beer here

If you would like to find out why breweries like this go for a 0.5% beer rather than a 0.0% beer then read my full article on that here

The Ingredients

With super sleek styling like this bottle i hope they aren’t going to ruin it with a load of unnecessary ingredients.

UNLTD. includes…

  • Water
  • Malted barley
  • Maltodextrin
  • Wheat
  • Hops
  • Yeast

Ok then, pretty standard apart from maltodextrin.

Maltodextrin is a white powder made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat. It has been added here as it is flavourless and doesn’t contain calories but will add to the body and mouthfeel of the beer.

I would guess that this is a very good indication that this beer is going to be super low in calories and carbs for them to need to add maltodextrin to bulk up the body.

The Nutrition

Any beer i have had with has maltodextrin added has been pretty skinny on the calories and carbs so i hope they haven’t added it for a different reason.

UNLTD. Nutrition Stats

Can you give me a second to pick my jaw up off the ground!

4kcal/100ml, 4?!

That is insane, i did not think anything would get close to Brewdog Nanny State at 6kcal/100ml and now UNLTD. has lopped 33% off that again.

You get to drink a whole bottle of this for just 13kcal. I really hope it tastes good, because if it does i will be stocking up.

The Look

Their black bottle and gold, bold, capital letter branding is certainly classy and striking. That gets top marks from me

The beer itself is a standard golden colour, not too pale. There was a surprisingly decent head that lingered for a short while

The Aroma

Lots and lots of hops to smell here. I can get the trifecta of citrus, pine and tropical smells all coming through. It doesn’t smell too sweet, well it can’t really can it? There is basically no sugar in there.

The Taste

This is very very close to being brilliant. With the nutrition stats it is putting up you simply can’t expect the body to be the same as say Schneider Weisse but it certainly isn’t the thinnest beer I’ve ever had. Fizzy water this is not.

The actual flavour is on a knife edge for me. The hoppy IPA taste is basically bang on where you want it but I just feel it gets a touch too bitter at the end and in the after taste. I think I am splitting hairs tho.

There are large amounts of citrus and tropical flavours to taste.

The malt side of things is actually quite strong for an IPA and I get quite a bit of toasted cereal.

I think the maltodextrin has worked wonders here to add body where there is none.

All in all this is a fantastic hoppy IPA on a complete shoestring of a calorie count

The Verdict

In case my review didn’t read well, be in no doubt this is a great beer. Without taking the nutrition stats into account it is great, add in the fact it is just about the lowest calorie beer in the world and it is special

The Score

9/10 – This is a top 10 beer for sure. You can not argue with 4kcal/100ml and then producing a decent body, creamy mouthfeel and big flavoured IPA. The bottle has 13kcal! Unbelievable stuff.
