About Seedlip

Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The S...
Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

Seedlip was founded in 2015 by Ben Branson. It is billed as the worlds first distilled non alcoholic spirit.

The backstory from their website goes as follows…

In 1651, a doctor called John French, published “The Art of Distillation”. The book documented recipes for distilling herbs in copper pots for medicinal benefits. At that same time, a family in Lincolnshire had started farming, hand-sowing seeds using baskets called ‘seedlips’.

Fast forward to present day, Ben happened upon John French’s recipes. The tinkerer that he is, he was inspired to purchase a small copper still and experiment by using the herbs and plants in his garden to distill a drink.

Spice 94 was their first offering and burst onto the scene with a high profile launch at a top London hotel. The first 1000 bottles went in 3 weeks, the second in 3 days and when they launched online, it took just 30mins to sell 1000.

The word was out and the word was good.

Is Seedlip a non alcoholic gin?

No, gin must have juniper berries as its main flavour, along with other botanicals. The Seedlip range isn’t flavoured with juniper so gets labelled as a non alcoholic spirit.

However, if you like gin and non alcoholic gin like i do, the mouth feel and botanicals of Seedlip are a very good fit for your palate.

How is Seedlip made?

They are naturally a bit coy with the entire distillation process but we are told that it takes 6 weeks in total. It involves bespoke maceration, distillation in a copper pot then the blending & filtration for each individual ingredient. Lastly they blend and bottle it all in England.

Seedlip Spice 94 Review

Spice 94 vis Seedlipdrinks.com

Ok, so let’s try the original first. The labelling is attractive and as it is coming up to Christmas i would like a little spice in my drink.

Ingredients

According to Seedlip, the Spice 94 has…

  • Allspice
  • Oak
  • Green cardamon
  • Cascarilla
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon

Amongst other flavours and ingredients.

Spice 94 Nutrition

This won’t be hard to remember…

Calories – 0kcal

Carbohydrate – 0g

Sugar – 0g

Alcohol – <0.5% ABV

Zero calories and zero sugar is impressive! They claim there may be trace amounts of alcohol in the drink so haven’t labelled it as zero alcohol or 0.0%. Although alcohol is calorie dense, so you would think even a trace amount of alcohol would give a single calorie or 2?

The Look

Crystal clear, beautiful packaging.

The Aroma

It’ a Christmas spice, citrus packed smell. Some non alcoholic gins i taste have a muted smell which doesn’t fill you for much hope for the flavour to come. Not think. I get cloves, allspice, lemon and grapefruit

The Taste

Im drinking a 50ml serving of this with a 150ml FeverTree light Indian tonic can over ice with no garnish.

There is some strange magic at work. If you smell it, there is enormous amounts of flavour. When you stick your pinkie into the bottle and taste a little it seems like nothing at all. Then you mix it with the tonic and it’s a flavour bomb.

Everything from the aroma transfers to the palate. Loads of Christmas style spices and citrus. The end lasts forever with a bitter note. Definitely the best non alcoholic spirit i’ve tried. It pips Tanqueray 0.0 from the top spot, my review of that here.

The verdict

This is top marks 10/10. Maybe its the season that is so appealing with the spice but regardless this is finely crafted and worth the price tag.

This is perfect for all winter long. The spices are warming and welcoming.

What do Seedlip say it tastes like?

Spice 94 – An aromatic & complex blend of All Spice, bark & citrus distillates. Seedlip Spice 94 is aromatic with warm spice notes (All Spice Berries & Cardamom) & citrus (Lemon & Grapefruit peel) top notes & a long bitter finish from the highest quality barks (Oak & Cascarilla).

Serving suggestion

To make our signature Seedlip & Tonic, pour 50ml over ice, top w/ tonic & garnish w/ a twist of Grapefruit peel.

Favourite “NoLo” Spice 94 Cocktail

Seedlip have an extensive list of “solo” cocktails for their products.

My absolute favourite is the Espresso MartiNO

Espresso MartiNO via Seedlipdrinks.com

Seedlip Grove 42 Review

Grove 42 vis seedlipdrinks.com

Grove 42 next. I like a citrus drink so im looking forward to this after Spice 94.

Ingredients

According to Seedlip, the Grove 42 has…

  • Bitter orange
  • Blood orange
  • Lemongrass
  • Lemon
  • Mandarin
  • Ginger

Amongst other flavours and ingredients.

Spice 94 Nurtition

Same again on the nutrition…

Calories – 0kcal

Carbohydrate – 0g

Sugar – 0g

Alcohol – <0.5% ABV

Impressive numbers, or lack of numbers!

The Look

Crystal clear, beautiful packaging. Standard for Seedlip

The Aroma

Immediate hit of orange. Not surprising with 3 different orange ingredients in there. Although it is a bit more perfumed with the lemon and lemongrass coming in.

The smell is pungently citrusy and from the Spice 94 i hope this translates into flavour.

The Taste

Im drinking a 50ml serving of this with a 150ml Fevertree light Indian tonic can over ice with no garnish.

There is it. Absolutely class again. Huge hits of the 3 different oranges and you can really taste the bitter notes, citrus and sweet flavours. The ginger appears more on the tasting for a bit of heat on the tongue.

The taste lingers for a long time too. This is a top quality liquid.

The verdict

9.5/10

It is as good as the Spice 94 but i think it’s more on point for this time of year. If Spice 94 is a winter classic, i think the citrus is an all year rounder but just below the winter specialist.

What do Seedlip say it tastes like?

Grove 42 – A zesty and warm blend of Orange, Lemongrass & Ginger. Seedlip Grove 42 is a complex, citrus forward blend of Lemon & three types of Orange (Bitter Orange, Mandarin & Blood Orange) & uplifting spice distillates (Ginger & Lemongrass).

Serving suggestion

Simply serve 50ml over ice, top w/ a premium tonic & garnish w/ a twist of Orange peel.

Seedlip Garden 108 Review

Lastly onto Seedlip Garden 108. It has a lot to live up after the Spice and Grove. Can they possibly go 3 from 3?!

Garden 108 via Seedlipdrinks.com

Ingredients

According to Seedlip, the Garden 108 has…

  • Peas
  • Hay
  • Spearmint
  • Rosemary
  • Hops
  • Thyme

Amongst other flavours and ingredients.

Spice 94 Nurtition

Same again on the nutrition…

I really am astounded how this has no sugar or calories. Hats off to Seedlip.

The Look

Crystal clear, beautiful packaging. Standard for Seedlip

The Aroma

Well now, that is very interesting. I get peak summer minty peas as the overwhelming smell. I didn’t know what to expect but that wasn’t it.

The more you smell it the more you want to smell it. It’s one of those. Its so unusual you keep trying to place the smells.

The Taste

Once again the taste follows on when the aroma left off. The minty peas is full in your face with some bitterness from the hops. Im not sure where the thyme is coming in tho or the hay.

It’s a summer drink tho, middle of the summer peas and mint in a tall glass with lots of ice. Thats the time to drink it. If i was reviewing it in July i might be a bit more upbeat.

They flavours are as strong as the Spice and Grove its just i’m maybe not what i want in my spirit, not every time anyway. I think this lends itself perfectly to the NoLo cocktails with its minty flavour.

The verdict

8.5/10

I found it just that bit different as a drink on its own but when mixed into the NoLo cocktails its brilliant.

Its definitely a summer drink of me. The taste is of a mid summer garden and that’s when it will come into its own

What do Seedlip say it tastes like?

Garden 108 – A floral blend of peas & hay, with traditional herb distillates in celebration of the English countryside. Seedlip Garden 108 captures the essence of the English countryside with sophisticated top notes of Peas & Hay with a complex herbal base character of spearmint, Rosemary & Thyme.

Serving suggestion

To make a delicious non-alcoholic drink, pour 50ml of Seedlip Garden 108 over ice, top w/ tonic & garnish w/ a Sugar Snap Pea or Mint sprig.
