The most widely drunk and most popular type of beer in the world is a lager. In the non alcoholic world it is no different.
I have sampled lagers and pilsners from all over the world and have learnt many lessons along the way.
I explored if non alcoholic beer tastes the same as alcoholic beer (article here) and also why some non alcoholic beers are 0.0% and others are 0.5%, it turns out there are very good reasons for it (article here).
Perhaps the biggest lesson i have learned is how difficult it is to create body and mouthfeel in a beer when you remove the alcohol. You don’t just want flavoured fizzy water and anything too thin feeling doesn’t compare to leaded beer.
The one thing that non alcoholic beers can do to reliably increase their body is to have additional or higher levels of carbs, however this has a knock on to increase the calories of the beer. A lot of craft breweries try to make really low carb and low calorie beers, which i commend and do rate these beers up a notch. However when i look though my “best non alcoholic beers” lists, they are dominated by average or higher than average carb beers versus the rest of the non alcoholic world.
This doesn’t always hold true, there are fantastic low carbs beers and plenty of terrible high carb beers but you have a better chance of making a purely great tasting and feeling beer when you have a bit more carbs. It is very hard to walk the tightrope of low carb, great tasting and big body.
Here endth the lesson. Without further a do, i give you the 20 best non alcoholic lagers to try, directly from my experience. I hope to add more North American beers to the list as they get imported or i get my hands on them.

They have styled this as a hoppy lager. It certainly is heavy on the hop side of a lager and less a golden malt forward flavour.
The high carbs creates a big body and mouthfeel and a tasty beer, even if it isn’t really typical of a lager.

A Russian beer that is not exactly made low calorie but at least they put the carbs to good use to make a big, flavoursome lager.
