Run Wild Alcohol Free IPA Review. By Athletic Brewing Co

Run Wild i bought and drank for this review

About Athletic Brewing Co

Athletic Brewing Co hail from the USA and claim to have a fancy new method to brew great 0.5% non alcoholic beers.

This is likely to be some for of limited fermentation with special low sugar grains and new yeasts that convert less sugar to alcohol.

The other way to do it is simply stop the brewing early before the alcohol is made but that can lead to a flavour limited beer, they won’t have used that technique.

What type of beer is Run Wild?

Run Wild is an IPA – India Pale Ale.

A pale ale is a usually a golden to amber colour ale, which is brewed using an ale yeast and mostly pale malt. The story goes they were created with enough hops to preserve a beer for the voyage to India.

The Ingredients

Ah the ingredient of a beer, i love to have a look at these and guess what the beer will taste like.

Athletic Brewing Co Run Wild has…

  • Water
  • Malted Barley
  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Hops
  • Yeast

Sometimes a list of ingredients tells a story, others not. These are the exact same 6 ingredients listed for their dark beer “All Out” (review here) but they could not be more different, night and day. Amazing really.

Now i presume if you dived a little deeper in the “hops” you could get a whole host of citra styled hops for Run Wild and a limited amount for All Out but still, impressive how two different beers come from the same list.

Run Wild Nutrition

The nutrition profile can be telling. Is the beer stuff full of sugar, have they gone for a very low calorie and possibly low flavour beer?

Is Run Wild really alcohol free?

You can see from my picture, the can suggests the beer is free from alcohol but that doesn’t mean it is 0.0% ABV due to different labelling laws.

UK and US law says only beers with an ABV of less then 0.05% can use alcohol free terminology. Athletic Brewing Co are using EU laws here where anything up to 0.5% ABV can be called alcohol free. Clear as mud, eh?

0.5% ABV is still “non alcoholic” by law tho.

Despite having x10 more alcohol than a true alcohol free beer, the amount of alcohol in Run Wild is still nothing to be worried by.

Many food stuffs have a higher ABV such as apple juice and even ripe bananas can get to 0.4% ABV.

The Look

This may be a bit too local but the can art looks like Donegal, Ireland, and the Wild Atlantic Way! If you’ve never been to that part of the world you really need to.

Anyways, the beer is actually quite dark like a strongly alcoholic IPA would be. I would often see non alcoholic IPAs as pretty pale in comparison. Interesting, i hope that is a good omen.

The Aroma

Boom. Citrus hops up the nose from the off. It is just how you’d expect a good IPA to start.

I detect a faint tropical smell but mostly citrus hops. It smells good and i cant wait to try it.

The Taste

Yum! Just the right balance of hops and malt. IPAs these days are sometimes turbo charged citrus but this isn’t, they’ve picked just the right amount for me.

There is plenty of backbone, nice body and a good all round mouthfeel. Again, all things that can be lacking in the non alcoholic IPA market.

The sweetness is just right, in that it isn’t sweet really, just a touch, if they had made it sweet it would be ruined.

What more to say, zinging citrus hops in a non alcoholic beer that you just want to keep drinking.

You’d really think this one is alcoholic, it’s hard to get over.

This may be my new go to beer for after work.

The Verdict

Perhaps the best non alcoholic IPA ive had? Better than Pine Trial (review here)?

I don’t think anyone would pick this as NA if you just gave it to them. You would think this is a 6.5% IPA, honestly.

9/10 –  brilliant IPA from Athletic Brewing Co. hats off
