Pico Nova Non Alcoholic Beer Review. Brussels beer project.

What type of beer is Pico Nova?

Pico Nova is a West Coast IPA.

West coast IPAs (India pale ales) are known for their high amount of hops which give a lot of bitterness and flavours of pine and citrus.

Contrast this with an East Coast IPA which would typically be less bitter, milder hops and sweeter. Horses for courses and all that.

The Ingredients

Unusually for a craft beer they don’t just list all their ingredients but tell us what grains they have used and what hops as well.

Different hops are integral to the flavour as the grains.

Pico Nova includes…

  • Pale ale
  • Rye malt
  • Toasted wheat
  • Chocolate spelt

“pale ale” is simply barley malt, not something fancy. Chocolate spelt is a little unusual in a light beer but should add some decent darker notes.

  • Pahto
  • Simcoe
  • Sabro

Simcoe is the big main hop here with lots of bitterness and pine. Sabro is a bit of a different hop so look out for tropical flavours, coconut and hints of ceder.

The Nutrition

I would expect this to be quite flavoursome so will they have to add lots of carbs for body and sugar for sweetness or will the gains and hops speak for themselves?

Pico Nova Nutrition Stats

Not bad, top easily top half into top quarter in terms of calories. Not ultra skinny but then again i don’t mind a few extra calories if it is going to substantially help the beer have more structure, body and mouthfeel.

The Look

The bright orange can with blue stipe is certainly striking and eye catching. I would draw the eye and make you want to try it.

The beer itself is a standard mid amber colour.

The Aroma

That is really quite aromatic, mostly of the hops. You get a nice bouquet of tropical fruits, pine and citrus. I don’t really pick up too much malt but that’s ok for an IPA

The Taste

If I’m honest, I thought it would deliver a bigger punch from the smell. The tropical tastes are quite muted and I get a lot more pine and orange than anything else.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I just thought I would have some more juicy tropical flavours.

It certainly isn’t over carbonated, if anything it tastes a little flat. A touch more fizz wouldn’t be a bad thing here.

There is a reasonable body and structure, it doesn’t taste too thin. Mouthfeel wise, it is equally pretty good.

The Verdict

This isn’t a bad beer, in fact it is pretty decent. I think a bit more fizz and living up to that tropical hops would add another dimension to it which it kind of lacks

The Score

7/10 – I think on another day I might rank this higher but I had picked it for a tropical flavour I didn’t really get. It is a reasonably decent West Coast IPA with decent structure.
