Lowtide Atomic Blonde Apricot Review. Fruity and fun.

Lowtide brewing co Atomic Blonde Apricot beer i bought and drank for this review

Lowtide Brewing Co are an English brewery, specialising in non alcoholic beer. Note that is non alcoholic at 0.5% ABV and not alcohol free 0.0% ABV

They are known for their funky can art and smooth beers. Will this one be any different?

The Ingredients

What goes in a beer is fascinating to me. I am a fan of the German Purity Laws where you can only have water, hops, barley and yeast. Make your best beer from that and no tinkering!

These days there is lots of hop extract and natural flavourings as well as things like apricot here.

Atomic Blonde has…

  • Water
  • Hops
  • Yeast
  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Spices
  • Apricot

Their hops of choice are yellow sub and pacifica.

It will be interesting to see what a spicy apricot beer tastes like.

The Nutrition

You can tell a lot about a beer from its nutrition profile. Is it low calorie and low sugar? If so you can forgive a bit of mouthfeel and even a bit of an empty feeling as they’ve not tried to put loads of sugar in. The opposite is true. When you see an added sugar content of over 2g/100g or certainly over 3g/100g you get really worried.

Lowtide Breewing Co have decided not to tell us what the nutrition profile of this beer is!

I can only imagine with the adding of apricot puree, it isn’t going to be super low sugar. Perhaps it is so bad they didn’t want to make it public?!

The Look

As with all the Lowtide Brewing Co beers, the cans are beautifully styled and instantly make you pick them up for a look and read. The artwork is by @john_miles

This one has a big apricot that is hooked up to wires and extraction devices to suck the flavour form it.

The beer itself is a pleasing golden colour, not too light, a bit like an apricot colour i suppose. There was a pretty impressive head which lasted longer than most non alcoholic beers.

The Aroma

There is a definite sweet fruit aroma but not overpowering. Also some hops comes to the fore but the sweet smell isn’t the plain wort type glucose syrup you can sometimes get in a cheap sweet lager.

It looks and smells like it should be a cracking beer you can’t wait to drink.

The Taste

Yep, that tastes just how i wanted it too. There is no denying it is a beautiful Belgian Blonde. There is a lovely rounded, smooth flavour. The hops and bitterness are in balance and the sweetness isn’t overpowering.

Then you start to appreciate the apricot. It is definitely there but it isn’t the dominant flavour and it doesn’t take over the whole beer, which might spoil it to be honest.

As you finish the 440ml can, it does get a touch sweeter. I think you taste it more and the apricot flavour lasts longer on the tongue.

I would REALLY love to know the nutritional profile here

The Verdict

As a one off can, this is beautiful. I think the apricot may get a bit much if you venture into 3+ of them in row. There is the nagging question of the sugar content here and Lowtide Brewing Co have decided not to tell us. You have to assume it’s reasonably high.

The Score

7.5/10 – Loses points for perhaps too much of a good thing in the apricot if you have a few and the fact they aren’t telling us the calories and sugars in there.

Is Atomic Blonde Apricot Free halal?

Atomic Blonde is a “non alcoholic” 0.5% ABV beer, so there is doubt as to if it can be Halal.

Ive researched this extensively and believe that 0.5% drinks can be Halal as i do not think they can get you drunk.

Ive written about the different types of non alcoholic and alcohol free gins and if they are Halal here

If you wanted to be super cautious then i would suggest not to consider 0.5% ABV drinks like Atomic Blonde as halal and only the true 0.0% ones.

Is Atomic Blonde Apricot Free gluten free?

Atomic Blonde Apricot is not gluten free as it contains barley. They confirm on the can as well.

I have an entire article on non alcoholic beers and gluten if you want more information.

Is Atomic Blonde Apricot Free vegan?

Yes. They stay so on the can.

For more on vegan beers see my article on the matter. Why beers may or may not be and how to check.

Review Overview

Loses points for perhaps too much of a good thing in the apricot if you have a few and the fact they aren't telling us the calories and sugars in there.
