Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The S...
Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

Perlenbacher 0.0 is available in Lidl. Now i shop there myself sometimes and there is amazing value to be had in how they squeeze costs.

There is little to be found out about Perlenbacher 0.0 online except that Lidl stock it. So i imagine it is cheap from start to finish, but does that make it very good value or a big avoid?

What type of beer is Perlenbacher 0.0?

You get no prizes for guessing this “IPA Non Alcoholic” is an IPA – Indian Pale Ale

The Ingredients

Well this German beer isn’t keeping to the German Purity laws anyway. The full list is…

  • Water
  • Barley malt
  • Hops
  • Hop extract

Ok, so no “flavourings” and double hops are good things. In beers, less ingredients is more.

The Nutrition

How does the nutritional info stack up?

That is a big old heap of sugar. Anything over 2g/100ml and you run the risk of it tasting very sweet unless you have great body and flavour. For this price point i’m not worried.

The Look

Very cheap and cheerful bottle. They couldn’t even afford an actual name! Simply styled and i guess it looks ok.

The beer is a touch darker than golden, more amber. It is darker than the Perlenbacher 0.0

The Aroma

The smell is a bit better than the Perlenbacher 0.0 too. A cleaner, mildly hoppy smell that seems like it should taste ok. I can smell he sweetness tho.

The Taste

It tastes better than Perlenbacher 0.0 too! My full review on that is here. I thought that was terrible.

This is “powered by Perlenbacher” but that seems to be good thing.

There are more hoppy flavours and some malted barley in there. Now lets not go overboard, this isn’t a great beer or a great IPA, it just isn’t terrible.

Without the comparison to the other Lidl 0.0, on its on this is average. It is nowhere near hoppy enough for an IPA and is overly sweet and creamy.

There is a big mouthfeel from the sugar but your mouth is full of that sugar and its not hugely pleasant.

The Verdict

If you are to buy only 1 non alcoholic beer from Lidl then this is it, however you can do much better just about anywhere

The Score

5/10. Average at best, overly sweet and not enough hops.

Is Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA halal?

As a “non alcoholic” 0.5% there is doubt

Ive researched this extensively and believe that 0.5% drinks can be Halal as i do not think they can get you drunk.

Ive written about the different types of non alcoholic and alcohol free gins and if they are Halal here

If you wanted to be super cautious then i would suggest not to consider 0.5% ABV drinks like Seedlip as halal and only the true 0.0% ones.

Is Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA gluten free?

Lidl Non Alcoholic IPABeer is not gluten free.

As it is brewed complying with the Reinheitsgebot, nothing fancy can be added to break up the gluten

I have an entire article on non alcoholic beers and gluten if you want more information.

Is Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA vegan?

Unknown, there is no information online and it is not listen on Barnivore. You may want to check with lidl or the company directly

For more on vegan beers see my article on the matter. Why beers may or may not be and how to check.

Is Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA really alcohol free?

Not quite.

This IPA has a small amount of alcohol but not more than 0.5% ABV, which is still considered non alcoholic, but not alcohol free.

You may want to take this into account with various medical conditions and religious beliefs.

You can read my entire article on how to tell how much alcohol is in a non alcoholic beer here

Is it safe to drink Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA when pregnant?

I have a full article on non alcoholic drinks in pregnancy can be seen here.

This is where the 0.5% ABV can become annoying. All the Obstetric Colleges around the world recommend no alcohol, 0.5% is clearly “some” alcohol but it is broken down almost immediately and any doctor i have spoken to doesn’t think it would be an issue for a few drinks.

A ripe banana can have up to 0.4% alcohol by volume. I have a full review of alcohol in common foods here, some of it is very surprising!

Is it safe to drink Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA when breastfeeding?

I have written a full article on drinking non alcoholic drinks whilst breastfeeding here

The advice when breastfeeding is slightly less stringent than when pregnant. As such there should be no issue drinking this IPA whilst breastfeeding.

If you wish to be cautious then you can wait 1-2hrs post drinking it before breastfeeding or expressing.

If you compare that to a glass of fresh orange juice has an ABV of up to 0.73%. I have a full review of alcohol in common foods here, some of it is very surprising!

Does Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA get you drunk?

I do not believe it is possible to get drunk on 0.5% non alcoholic spirits or gin.

I have crunched all the numbers and have written an article about it here

You would need to drink 20 bottles quickly and keep drinking at that pace to feel some of the effects of alcohol.

Can you drink Lidl Non Alcoholic IPA and drive?

Following on from the fact 0.5% ABV drinks like this IPA can’t really get you drunk, you are equally safe to drink them and drive.

Im sure you can guess by now but ive done the math on this one too and written an article about it here.

The strictest parts of America have an under 21, zero tolerance zone or policy to blood alcohol levels and driving. Even in these zones, you would be able to have 5 or less “non alcoholic” 0.5% ABV drinks before getting a DUI.

It is something to consider tho. If you are not subject to those zero tolerance rules then the amount you can drink is vastly higher.
