One of the big reasons (apart from the no alcohol) someone may switch to a non alcoholic or alcohol free beer is the better nutrition and lower calories.
Is Guinness 0.0 low in calories or is “the black stuff” high in carbs and sugar?
Guinness 0.0 is a low calorie, alcohol free beer. It has 50% less calories than Guinness Draft at only 17kcal per 100ml or 91kcal per pint. In general, non alcoholic and alcohol free beers are lower in calories than alcoholic beers but some alcohol free beers have significant added sugar.
How many calories are in Guinness 0.0?
The big stand out piece of nutritional information that someone usually looks for is the calorie count. It can come in various forms depending on the bottle or can size or where you search for the information.
You need to compare like to like in terms of volume so ive included the calorie count for various volumes in the table below.
In general i like to use calories (kcal) per 100ml as i can apply it to every beer and i am now used to looking at it. I know quickly if a calorie number is high or low for it’s value per 100ml.
|Amount||Calories in kcal|
|1 fl oz||5|
|12 fl oz||60|
|20 fl oz||100|
These numbers might not mean anything to you if you don’t write a non alcoholic drink blog or something! So we need to go on to quantify these numbers in terms of other beers from Guinness, other beers and even other drinks.
After looking at all these beverages we can really see where Guinness stands
How many calories are in other Guinness beers?
The first step at assessing if Guinness 0.0 is low calorie is to see how it compares to the other Guinness beer range.
Guinness are a huge company and have a number of beers. They have lagers, stouts and porters.
The table below is the calories per 100ml for a selection of their most popular beers…
|Type of Guinness||Calories per 100ml in kcal|
|West Indies Porter||40|
|Hop House Lager||35|
Well that is telling isn’t it. even if you don’t know what a low calorie number is for a beer per 100ml you can see that Guinness 0.0 has over 50% few calories than all their others. That is impressive stuff.
How will that compare to other beers tho? Maybe Guinness is an anomaly.
Guinness 0.0 vs other beers.
I think it is fair to have a look at a few big brands and also some “light” beers to see if Guinness 0.0 can stack up vs them as well as it’s own.
Below is a table of some big brands and light beers.
|Type of Beer||Calories per 100ml in kcal|
|USDA standard beer||43|
|Brewdog Nanny State||6|
Guinness 0.0 is again head and shoulders ahead of other alcoholic beers and even alcoholic light beers.
I have included BrewDog Nanny State in as a reference. It is the lowest calorie, non alcoholic beer i have found and i think exists. My full review of it is here.
It is a complete different kettle of fish tho as it isn’t a stout and honestly, basically no other beers get close to it.
Guinness 0.0 vs other drinks.
Lastly lets see how Guinness 0.0 compares to non beers for a fuller understanding of it’s calorie count.
|Type of drink||Calories per 100ml in kcal|
Not surprisingly the fizzy drinks are high in calories as are fruit juices. WKD is a fizzy sweet alcopop as it’s calories are extremely high due to both sugar and alcohol.
Guinness 0.0 is easily the lowest calorie of these common drinks.
Is Guinness 0.0 low in carbohydrate?
Yes Guinness 0.0 is low in carbohydrate. It has 3.5g of carbohydrate per 100ml which is slightly higher than Guinness Draft at 3g per 100ml but low in overall comparison against most beers.
|Type of Guinness||Carbohydrate per 100ml in kcal|
|West Indies Porter||4.4|
|Hop House Lager||3|
Whilst 3.5g/100ml of carbohydrate is towards the top end of the Guinness scale but if we compare this to both alcoholic and non alcoholic beers you will see it is actually very low…
|Type of beer||Carbohydrate per 100ml in kcal|
|Leffe Blond 0.0||9.8|
|Galactic Milk Stout 0.5%||6.7|
So Guinness has about the same carbohydrate load as the alcoholic beers and usually much lower than the other non alcoholic ones. In fact there are very few non alcoholic beers that have a lower carbohydrate count than Guinness 0.0
Is Guinness 0.0 low in sugar?
This is “added sugar”. A proportion of the carbohydrate is present as just sugar. It is rapidly digested and can cause spikes in blood glucose and is turned into fat readily.
In general, alcoholic beers, especially the lagers, will have no added sugar. The non alcoholic beers will generally always have more sugar but the trick is to find the lowest of them.
The table below shows some of different sugar levels in alcoholic and non alcoholic beers.
|Type of beer||Sugar per 100ml in kcal|
|Erdinger Alkolholfrei 0.5%||3.6|
|Leffe Blond 0.0||1.1|
|Galactic Milk Stout 0.5%||3.1|
As you can see, there is quite a wide range in added sugar. The lowest calorie, non alcoholic beers, like Guinness 0.0 have little added sugar.
Why are non alcoholic beers lower in calories than alcoholic beers?
So non alcoholic beers have more sugar but fewer calories, how is this?! The answer is alcohol is calorie dense. A gram of alcohol has nearly 7 kcal, which is nearly as much as a gram of fat.
A 12 fl oz glass of 5% beer will have most of its calories coming from the alcohol and not nearly as much from the sugar.
|Substance||KCal per gram|
Alcohol is even much more calorie dense than sugar. So the reduction in alcohol more than offsets the increase in sugar in terms of calories.
Guinness 0.0 is a very low calorie beer and a very low calorie drink in general. This comes from being alcohol free and having a relative modest amount of carbohydrate and very little added sugar.
