Incel-Brauerei Snorkelers Salt IPA Review. A salty dog.

Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

Insel-Brauerei brew their beers on Rügen island in Germany. Insel actually means island . Their stated aim is to produce rare beers in part with unique brewing and in part due to bottle conditioning, where the beer is carbonated in the bottle with live yeast, developing flavour whilst it does.

To aid the flavour build up, Incel beers are wrapped in paper which keeps out the sunlight.

For their non alcoholic range, they use vacuum distillation to extract the alcohol and the result is they win multiple awards at the World Beer Awards

What type of beer is Incel Snorkelers?

Incel Snorkelers is an IPA with added sea salt.

An IPA is a pretty well know quantity and not a rare beer. They are an India pale ale, made with top fermenting ale yeast and are hop heavy. They can have citrus, pine, tropical or a mixture of hop flavours depending on the style and what hops are used.

The added salt is certainly a rarity. It tends to be almost exclusively used in the sour German Gose beers. I have reviewed some like Henry Gose Lightly. You would be safe in saying, i’m not really a fan.

The Ingredients

Incel are proper German brewers and use the minimum ingredients to get the job done, you have to be a fan of that. You don’t tend to see “natural flavouring” with them.

Incel Snorkelers includes…

  • Water
  • Malted barley
  • Malted wheat
  • Hops
  • Yeast
  • Sea salt

Once again it is as you would expect. Just the bare bones ingredients of grains, hops and of course salt in a sea salt IPA. I am worried about what it will taste of tho.

The Nutrition

In every Incel beer i have reviewed they have somehow managed to produce massively different beers with exactly the same nutrition stats. Will they mix it up here?

Values per 100ml or 100g
Alcohol0.5%
Calories 32kcal
Carbohydrate6.4g
Sugars0.5g
Snorkelers Nutrition Stats

Nope, the same again. Every beer in their non alcoholic range has the same stats.

They are all relatively high in carbs and calories but not much added sugar. 32kcal/100ml is pretty high in the non alcoholic beer world but it would still represent a decent calorie saving over most alcoholic beers.

The Look

You couldn’t have an Incel beer without the paper wrapper. This one has a snorkeler on the front, funnily enough

The beer is a touch darker than golden with a nice foamy head that is lasting a long time

The Aroma

I don’t get a lot off this one, even with a big old sniff. There is light hops but it don’t get a lot of cereal, bread or malt.

The Taste

I’m not so sure about this. When you first take a swig, there is a lovely creamy mouthfeel and big body. The initial taste is of citrus hops but then it goes wrong.

A second after drinking the salt appears. I could really stop the review there, it would stop me drinking further if I didn’t have to.

The salt turns your whole mouth sour and, well, salty. The taste lingers well after you swallow and I don’t find it pleasant.

I know the whole salt beer thing has a big craft following but I just cant get behind it personally.

I’m not a big fan of weird flavours overpowering a beer and again here, I don’t really want a salty, bitter beer.

The Verdict

I can see there is probably a good beer in there and taking out the salt would clearly help, but then you aren’t left with a salt IPA, which is sort of the point of the beer.

The Score

5/10 – I have had worse beers but I don’t think I would be ordering this one again.
