How Much Sugar Is In Non Alcoholic Beer? Is it bad for you?

For many, knowing how much sugar is in their food and drink is essential. It could be for a medical reason, a diet, dental hygiene or just general wellness. Whatever the reason i will explore in depth just how much sugar is in non alcoholic beer and all the various subtypes.

This is quite a lengthy post so these are the different sections i will be covering so you can fast forward to each in turn…

How much sugar is in non alcoholic beer?

Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The S...
Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

My study contains 106 different non alcoholic beers, covering lagers, ales, stouts, porters, wheats, fruits and sour beers.

I found the average non alcoholic beer has 2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.2g of sugar per 12fl oz.

The range of results is very interesting however, the lowest sugar per 12fl oz serving i have reviewed is zero, 0g but the highest is 35.1g. The diversity across the non alcoholic beer market and subtypes is huge.

Is non alcoholic beer lower in sugar than alcoholic beer?

So we now know how much sugar is in the average non alcoholic beer but how does that compare to an alcoholic beer?

The USDA state the average alcoholic beer has 0g of sugar per 100ml and 0g of sugar in a 12fl oz serving.

Now you will find alcoholic beers with some sugar so i think the real average is above 0g but in general, all the sugar in the wort is fermented to alcohol by the yeast, leaving none.

Sometimes lactose is added which doesn’t ferment, especially to stouts. This is an animal sugar and would be in the final beer.

Having an average of 0g makes working out any percentage increase difficult as you cant divide or multiply by zero.

How does non alcoholic beer compare to carbs in other drinks?

If alcoholic beer has no sugar then nearly all non alcoholic beers are going to have more sugar than them. But how do non alcoholic beers compare to other common drinks to gain a bit more perspective into their sugar load?

Below is a list of other common drinks…

Clearly alcoholic beer is a best in class in terms of sugar loads but comparing non alcoholic beer to other common drinks shows that its sugar load is pretty low.

Which non alcoholic beer has the highest sugar?

If you have read my other articles on calories or carbs in non alcoholic beer, then the answer to this question will come as no surprise…

Henry And His Science from Mikkeller

Henry And His Scicene has a teeth rotting 9.9g of sugar per 100ml and 35.1g of sugar per 12fl oz.

A teaspoon of sugar is 4g so in a 12fl oz serving of Henry And His Science, there is nearly 9 teaspoons of sugar. For a beer, this is quite incredible.

There is some controversy over these figures, with other reviewers on social media having different values for this beer. I decided i had to go straight to Mikkeller for the answer.

An executive assistant called Tone Xenia Borring replied and confirmed these numbers are indeed correct.

Below is a picture of the nutrition from my actual can.

Now, Henry And His Science is a bit of an outlier so for more context i’ll include a few more of the highest sugar, non alcoholic beers which i have reviewed.

As you can see, Henry And His Science has about 70% more sugar than the next nearest non alcoholic beer that i have reviewed. That is a huge outlier so perhaps can be ignored when thinking what the top range of sugar in non alcoholic beer is.

Any sugar figure into the 5g+ zone (per 100ml) is top end of sugar in non alcoholic beer. 5g is 150% more sugar than the average non alcoholic beer (2g per 100ml)

Which non alcoholic beer has the lowest sugar?

Two non alcoholic beers share the prize as having the lowest sugar levels. They both have zero sugar.

1. Bitburger Drive.

Bitburger Drive has 0g (zero) of sugar per 100ml and 0g of sugar per 12fl oz serving.

As well has having zero sugar, it is also delicious, which is handy in a non alcoholic beer you are likely drinking for pleasure!

In fact, Bitburger Drive 0.0, sneaks in at a lofty number 7 in my Best Non Alcoholic Beers list.

1. Partake Pale

Partake Pale has 0g (zero) of sugar per 100ml and 0g of sugar per 12fl oz serving.

Partake Pale is a bit of an anomaly. It also has the lowest calories in any beer, 10kcal per 12fl oz and the lowest carbs, 0g per 12fl oz. Just unbelievable from Partake.

Unfortunately i have not been able to get Partake Pale imported to my local to try in person, but reading all the reviews about it suggests it is pretty decent.

Are alcohol free (0.0%) or non alcoholic (<0.5%) beers lower in sugar?

If you have started to drink different non alcoholic beers you will have seen that there is some different terminologies and different alcohol by volumes (ABV). Some beers are <0.05% “alcohol free” whereas others are 0.5% or <0.5% and “non alcoholic”

Ive looked into the reasons for having this split and some of them might surprise you. You can read my full article on why the ABV difference exists and what the knock on effects are here

0.0% AVB, alcohol free beers have, on average, 2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.1g of sugar per 12fl oz. This is based on 33 beers in my study

<0.5% AVB, non alcoholic beers have, on average, 2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.2g of sugar per 12fl oz. This is based on 73 beers in my study.

All figures have been rounded to 1 decimal place.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic lager?

In my study of 32 non alcoholic lagers, i found, on average, they contained 1.4g of sugar per 100ml and 5.1g of sugar per 12fl oz.

This means that a general non alcoholic lager has about 30% less sugar than the average non alcoholic beer, that is a large saving.

The light coloured beers, compared to dark, fruit and sour beers have a lot less sugar on average as it just isn’t needed.

There are quite a lot of low carb and sugar, craft non alcoholic beers that significantly pull down the average but the highest sugar non alcoholic lager has “only” 3.1g of sugar per 100ml.

I had “only” in brackets as i found with a lager or pilsner, if the sugar crept up over the non alcoholic beer average of 2g per 100ml, it ran a severe risk of tasting far too sweet and in a lager, that is really nasty.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic IPAs?

In my study, i included 19 non alcoholic IPAs and found the average was 2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.2g of sugar per 12fl oz.

Well this won’t take much number crunching. Non alcoholic IPAs have, on average, the same sugar content as the wider non alcoholic beer market.

There was quite a wide range in the non alcoholic IPAs with the lowest sugar beer having 0.1g of sugar per 100ml and the highest having 4.5g of sugar per 100ml.

You can easily shop around and find yourself a very low sugar IPA. The higher sugar IPAs in my study that dragged up the average, were mostly from one brewery, Brulo. I found nearly all their beers terrible, so all the more reason to avoid them.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic ales?

In my study i included 23 non alcoholic ales. They included cask, amber, brown, pale, summer, American pale, saison, golden, Belgian abbey and kolsch.

I found the average was 1.5g of sugar per 100ml and 5.5g of carbs per 12fl oz

The ale family are a very diverse bunch of beers. The widest range of any subgroup was in the ales.

The lowest sugar ale had 0g of sugar per 100ml whereas the highest had 9.9g of sugar per 100ml. The high sugar beer was an extreme outlier with the next highest only having 3.6g of sugar per 100ml

If you removed the high outlier from the averages, the average ale would drop to 1.2g of sugar per 100ml and 4.1g per 12fl oz.

Comparing non alcoholic ales to non alcoholic beers we see that a non alcoholic ale has about 25% less sugar than a general non alcoholic beer.

There are a lot of craft IPAs which use strong hop flavours to deliver a beer with a punch at the same time as having little carbs and sugar. You often need carbs and sugar for body but if you can get enough flavour, usually bitter hops, you can get away with less sweetness.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic stouts and porters?

In my study, i included 9 non alcoholic stouts and porters. I found the average was 2.2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.9g of carbs per 12fl oz.

Stouts and porters are usually a bit sweeter than light coloured beers and can have added sugar such as lactose to give body and a creamy head.

The lowest sugar stout only had 0.2g of sugar per 100ml and the highest was 3.5g of sugar per 100ml

Comparing non alcoholic stouts and porters to non alcoholic beers we see that a non alcoholic stouts and porters have about 10% more sugar than a general non alcoholic beer.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic wheat beer?

In my study, i included 8 non alcoholic wheat beers. I found the average was 2g of sugar per 100ml and 7.1g of sugar per 12fl oz.

6 of my 8 wheat beers were from Germany, the home of the wheat beer. The two that were not, were by far the lowest sugar of the 8.

If i ran an average just from the German wheat beers the average would be 2.5g of sugar per 100ml and 8.9g of sugar per 12fl oz. This is because most of the German wheat beers are designed to be isotonic, that means their sugar and salts are in the same concentration as would be found in you blood.

For more information on isotonic beers and why they might be useful for rehydration and sports drink, then read my article here.

Comparing non alcoholic wheat beers and non alcoholic beers we see that a non alcoholic wheat beers have about the same sugar as a generic non alcoholic beer. However, just looking at the German wheat beers, they have on average 25% more sugar than a general non alcoholic beer.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic fruit beer?

In my study i included 10 non alcoholic fruit beer and radlers (50/50 mix of non alcoholic beer and lemonade type drink). I found the average was 4.4g of sugar per 100ml and 15.6g of sugar per 12fl oz.

Clearly that is a big jump up in sugar but entirely predictable. When you start putting sugar laden fruit or lemonade in a beer the sugar goes up. If you put a really acidic fruit in a beer, you need a lot of sugar to balance out the acidity.

Flensburger Radler was remarkably low in carbs at just 0.8g per 100ml but the highest was 5.8g per 100ml. Indeed, Flensburger was somewhat of a low outlier and removing it would have brought the average up to 4.8g per 100ml and 17g per 12 flow.

Comparing non alcoholic fruit beers to non alcoholic beers we see that a non alcoholic fruit beers have about 120% more sugar than a general non alcoholic beer. That is a huge increase and one to be mindful of if you drink this style of beer a lot.

How much sugar is in non alcoholic sour beer?

In my study i included 4 sours beers. I am not a big fan of them and do not enjoy drinking them. With low numbers in this leg, the average may be unreliable.

I found the average was 3.9g of sugar per 100ml and 13.8g of carbs per 12fl oz.

Sour beers are very acidic and need a lot of sugar to balance that out, so they will have a lot more sugar than the typical pale beer.

Comparing non alcoholic sour beers to non alcoholic beers we see that a non alcoholic sour beers have about 90% more sugar than a general non alcoholic beer.
