How Many Ounces In A Glass Of Wine? You don’t just fill the glass!

We have all been in the situation where you and a friend are drinking a bottle of wine and suddenly it is gone. You try to work out how many glasses you had but it might only be 3-4. Is that normal? How many glasses would a bar get out of a bottle, are home measures a bit too heavy handed?

Just how many ounces are in a glass of wine?

How many ounces in a glass of wine?

The CDC state the standard glass of wine is 5fl oz which equates to 150ml. This does not mean this is the standard serving you will get in a bar but it means you can compare it to other standard alcoholic drinks.

What is a standard drink?

Alcoholic drinks come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, flavours and strengths. You would think it would be impossible to compare wines to beers and across to a spirit.

Luckily the USDA and CDC have devised a list of “standard” alcoholic drinks. Each one contains the exact same amount of alcohol – 14g of alcohol (0.6 ounces).

Below is a list of the standard drinks, volumes and ABV that all give 14g of alcohol.

Drink and volumeAlcohol content
12fl oz Beer5%
5fl oz Wine12%
1.5fl oz Spirit40%
Standard drinks

This means you can quickly tell how many wines you have had compared to a beers of even shots.

What is a standard glass of wine?

As we can see from the information above, a standard glass of wine is defined as 12% alcohol by volume but importantly for this article, it has 5fl oz.

What is 5fl oz in millilitres?

A lot of the world uses the metric system, even the bottles of wine themselves come in 750ml standard size.

1fl oz is about 30ml which means that 5fl oz will be 150ml

How many standard glasses of wine in a bottle?

If a standard glass of wine is 150ml or 5fl oz and a bottle of wine has 750ml, that means there are 5 standard glasses of wine in a bottle.

How many ounces does a glass of wine hold?

Glasses come in all sorts of shapes and sizes these days too. I have a red wine glass which i can fit an entire bottle in!

But the standard type of wine glass will hold 12fl oz or 355ml. This leaves 7fl of of free space on a standard 5fl oz pour which doesn’t make the glass look overly full, nor does it make it look to empty.

What other sizes of glasses of wine are there?

Just because a standard glass of wine is 5fl oz or 150ml, that doesn’t mean that is what you will get served in a bar or restaurant.

You may well come across “small” and “large” on a menu, generally this will mean 4fl oz or 6fl oz in the USA and 125ml or 175ml in the UK.

Prosecco, Champagne and other sparkling wines may well be served at the smaller size of 4fl oz or 125ml.

A standard serving or the very sweet dessert wine is likely to be 2fl oz

How many glasses of wine to get drunk?

The CDC states it takes the average 160lb adult male, 4 standard wines to get drunk. A standard glass of wine is 5fl oz and 12% ABV. The 4 wines have to be drank over 1-2 hours. If you are a female or lighter then it will take less wine, if you are a significantly heavier male, it may take 5+ glasses of wine to get drunk.

How physically big you are has a huge impact on the amount of alcohol it takes to get you drunk. If you have ever been out drinking with friends, you might notice the larger ones seem they they have hollow legs compared to the smaller ones.

Alcohol is distributed throughout the body so if you have more actual body, less of the alcohol will remain in your bloodstream, lowering your blood alcohol concentration

Biological females get intoxicated quicker and with lower amounts of alcohol. This is due to a few reasons.

A female will on average be smaller than a male, they have circa 40% less alcohol dehydrogenase (the enzyme that breaks down alcohol) than an equivalent male and they have a higher percentage of fat to lean mass so more of the alcohol is in their bloodstream.
