Everything You Want To Know About Beck’s Blue. All questions answered

Becks blue beer i bought and drank for this review

Beck’s Blue is pretty much the original in the alcohol free beer world. However despite being around forever, the whole sector is only now picking up in volume.

With the influx of drinkers there are many new unanswered questions for the newbies.

The terminologies can be tricky. It is labelled both as a beer but also as no alcohol, so which is it, or both?

Can you drink it and drive, can it get you drunk, is it gluten free? There are many questions and i hope to answer as many as i can in this article.

What type of beer is Beck’s Blue?

Beck’s Blue is German pilsner-style lager with a distinctive and refreshing taste.

This means it has a light straw to golden colour with more bitter or earthy taste. Basically a bit more depth of flavour and hops than a regular lager.

Where is Beck’s Blue from?

Beck’s Blue is from the northern German city of Bremen.

US manufacture of Beck’s Brew has been based in St. Louis, Missouri, since early 2012

What is Beck’s Blue nutrition profile?

Alcohol – 0.0%

Calories – 14kcal per 100ml

Carbohydrate – 3.1g per 100ml

Sugar – 0.2g per 100ml

Just excellent numbers from Beck’s Blue. There are very few non alcoholic or alcohol free beers that get anywhere near that level of calories and sugar.

What are the ingredients of Beck’s Blue?

The ingredients are…

  • Water
  • Malted Barley
  • Hops
  • Yeast

A classic German beer is only has water, barley, hops and yeast. This is called the Reinheitsgebot, the German purity law of 1516, with only 4 natural ingredients.

I do love to see this, to make a beer, a non alcoholic one at that, with just the traditional ingredients is class. You know how it will taste already. Not chemically or artificial, but clean and crisp.

Is Beck’s Blue healthy?

Compared to many drinks then yes it is.

Beck’s Blue is very low in calories and sugar, one of the lowest on the market actually.

It is a good choice if you are trying to lose weight or switch away from alcohol which has a host of negative effects on your health.

How is Beck’s Blue made?

Beck’s Blue goes through the same brewing process as traditional Beck’s and contains the same four natural ingredients – barley, hops, yeast and water. The only difference being that Beck’s Blue undergoes de-alcoholisation

The alcohol is removed with vacuum distillation. This is a process whereby the beer is subject to a vacuum meaning it only needs heated to 30 degrees or so for the alcohol to distill out.

This low temperature keeps more of the volatile aromatic compounds that flavour the beer.

Is Beck’s Blue really alcohol free?

Beck’s Blue is indeed alcohol free. It has an alcohol content lower than 0.05% which classes as alcoholic free.

Labelling in the non alcoholic and alcohol free world are very confusing, with different countries having different rules.

You can read my entire article on how to tell how much alcohol is in a non alcoholic beer here

For medical and medicament purposes you should consider that Beck’s Blue is without alcohol (as it is).

No, you can not get drunk drinking Beck’s Blue

I crunched all the numbers and have written an article about how you can’t get drunk on 0.0% beer here

What does Beck’s Blue taste like?

My complete Beck’s Blue tasting review can be read here

It is actually pretty decent. Baring in mind that they have made this particularly low calorie and the recipe is from when your granny was little, it holds up remarkably well!

I always prefer a German pilsner style lager over a normal old plain lager. With a pilsner you get more hops, more hops for me equals more flavour. We are in a world of double IPAs so i need a bit more about my beer.

This actually delivers quite nicely. It is refreshing, just the right amount of bitterness, nice malty mouthfeel and a moderate hoppy hit.

As a beer that contains zero alcoholic i think Beck’s Blue can be considered as halal.

As a general rule, alcohol free beer can be Halal. The beer needs to be 0.0% ABV for the strict Islamic Law to deem it Halal. Nearly all the major beer brands are producing zero alcohol beers.

Not all non or low alcoholic beers are 0.0%, meaning it is critical to read the label.

I have written extensively about if alcohol free beer is halal and you can read my article here
