Gordon's 0.0 gin i bought and drank for this review

Many people are joining the alcohol free revolution and for many different reasons.

One thing they all have in common is there are questions they need the answers to with these new products.

Gordon’s is the biggest name in gin and huge volumes are trying their 0.0% alcohol free version. My article hopes to answer many of the common questions about it i have came across.

What type of gin is Gordon’s 0.0?

Gordon’s and Gordon’s 0.0 are “London Dry Gins”.

A London dry gin has very strong juniper flavours, which is the berry used for its trademark taste. They usually have strong citrus notes as well.

Not surprisingly they originate from London, England and Gordon’s dates back over 250 years!

Where is Gordon’s 0.0 from?

Gordon’s Gin, being a London dry gin, comes from London, Southwark then in Clarkenwell to be exact, in the 1760s onwards.

Since then, with its global demand, it is distilled across the globe.

What is Gordon’s 0.0 nutrition profile?

Clear spirits are basically free of carbohydrate and sugar (only trace amounts), the calories all come from the calorie dense alcohol. For a complete article on calories in non alcoholic gin then read my article on it here

Alcohol and calorie comparison

The Gordon’s 0.0 has only about 5% of the calories of its alcoholic sibling. Impressive stuff if the flavour stacks up.

We are told (and it’s true) that the majority of your gin and tonic is the tonic so when thinking about calories it must be thought of.

Lets look at a few FeverTree Tonics on the market…

FeverTree TonicKcal per 150ml mixerSugar per 150ml mixer
Elderflower Tonic Water5111.7g
Light Indian Tonic Water234.4g
Premium Indian Tonic Water4210.7
Aromatic Tonic Water5611.7g
FeverTree mixers

That is quite the variation but you would expect that in a whole product range. You can make smarter choices to reduce calories from you mixers.

What happens if you combine the best and worst?

So You could be saving 136 calories a drink with a light tonic and Gordon’s 0.0. That is a pretty larger saving if you scale it up over a few G&Ts.

What are the ingredients of Gordon’s 0.0?

The 37.5% Gordon’s has a list of botanicals they use as flavours as will Gordon’s 0.0, they include

  • juniper berries
  • coriander seeds
  • angelica root
  • liquorice
  • orris root
  • orange
  • lemon peel

Have a try and see if you can pick out all those! You have to have no sense of taste not to get the juniper and some sort of citrus.

Im not sure i could pick the roots out of a line up tho.

Now i go back to smelling it, i can take myself into liquorice.

Is Gordon’s 0.0 healthy?

Alcohol free gins can have surprising health benefits as i’ve written about here.

These include…

  • Reduced hayfever
  • Very low in calories
  • No sugar
  • Good for the skin
  • Aids digestion
  • Reduces bloating and urinary infections
  • Best drink for diabetics
  • Helps with coughs and colds
  • May help joint inflammation

Not a bad list to have.

I think the biggest benefit is when switching from an alcoholic gin to an alcohol free gin like Gordon’s 0.0, the calorie saving is huge.

If you are looking for an adult style spirit or gin and want to loose weight or reduce your sugar intake then this should be near the top of the list.

Ive written a full article on non alcoholic gins in relation to calories and sugar available here

Labelling in the non alcoholic and alcohol free world are very confusing, with different countries having different rules.

My article on how to navigate your way around the terminology and labelling can be read here

What does Gordon’s 0.0 taste like?

The TLDR version is – absolutely brilliant!

I got a huge, absolutely huge junipery gin hit that just keeps on going and coasting the tongue and mouth. I had to check the bottle to make sure it really was 0.0, it tasted so much like gin.

If you don’t do a direct taste test vs an alcoholic gin so you can immediately pick up the hard alcohol hit in your throat, you probably wouldn’t know this was an alcohol free version. Im still in shock that it is alcohol free!

You have layers and depth to the flavour, juniper (of course) as well as I beautiful zesty lemon type note.

My score was 10/10. You can’t beat this.

How do you serve Gordon’s 0.0?

Fill a chilled highball glass with fresh ice cubes. Pour 50ml of Gordon’s gin over the ice and top up with chilled tonic. Gently squeeze a wedge of lime into the glass before dropping it in, then give it all a final stir. The definitive G&T, and a great way to begin any occasion.

Serve in a highball glass.

As a general rule, alcohol free gins can be Halal. The spirit needs to be 0.0% ABV for the strict Islamic Law to deem it Halal. Many of the major spirit brands, mostly the gins, are launching non alcoholic ranges. Not all non or low alcoholic spirits are 0.0% ABV, meaning it is critical to read the label.

Gordon’s 0.0 contains only a trace amount of alcohol which is lower than most breads and fruit. As discussed you are unable to get drunk on it either.

I have written a full article dedicated to this big topic
