Estrella Galicia 0.0% Alcohol Free Beer Review

Estrella Galicia 0.0 alcohol free beer i bought and drank for this review

What type of beer is Estrella Galicia 0.0?

Estrella Galicia 0.0 is a pilsner style lager.

These are mainly continental European beers and originally hail from the Czech Republic.

They are a pale lager with a more hop heavy flavour than a traditional lager. They can also be slightly sweeter and may use other ingredients other than just barley (maize or rice).

I prefer a pilsner over a lager, i like the hop forward flavour but i don’t want them too sweet.

The Ingredients

As this is a pilsner you often find more than one grain used, this is entirely normal. What i usually don’t want to see is some form of added sugar syrup. This just screams the brewer is trying to mask a rubbish beer with lots of sweetness. There are some exceptions but that is the general rule in my eyes.

Estrella Galicia 0.0 ingredients are…

  • Water
  • Malted Barley
  • Maize
  • Hops

Estrella Galicia 0.0 Nutrition

I mention i like a pilsner vs a lager and that pilsners are a bit sweeter. That being said, i don’t want a sugary sweet beer! That is often the sign of a lazy brew where they hope the sugar masked the poorly flavoured beer.

Anything over about 2g/100ml of added sugar runs the risk of a lager/pilsner tasting too sweet unless they have really concentrated on their flavours.

So that isn’t too bad really. The calories are middle of the road, the sugars are a bit higher than id like but the carbs aren’t too high. The ratio of sugar to carbohydrate is a bit high so will that translate into a sweet nasty beer?

Is Estrella Galicia 0.0 really alcohol free?

Estrella Galicia 0.0 is indeed alcohol free. Legally any beer in the EU can call itself alcohol free with an ABV of <0.5% but this one really is the USA/UK definition of alcohol free with an ABV of <0.05%

Labelling around the world is often confusing. You can read my entire article on how to tell how much alcohol is in a non alcoholic beer here

The Look

This is a nicely styled bottle that screams summer sun beer. I like it, it got me to buy it.

The beer itself is a pleasing mid amber colour, not too light so you think it will have limited flavour. There was basically no head to speak of tho.

The Aroma

It’s a mostly neutral smell for me. There is some malted barley but not a lot. I dont get much hops at all but i also don’t get much of a sweet smell which is encouraging seeing as this has passed the Rubicon of 2g/100ml of added sugar.

The Taste

Well, it is certainly interesting! Ive had to take about 4 mouthfuls before i know how to start here.

There is certainly a taste explosion that happens in the mid to back of your tongue. There is a nice malty hum with subtle hop flavour. It docent go quite far enough in the hops for me, to be a big European pilsner.

There is plenty of fizz and along with the reasonably big flavours you aren’t lacking mouthfeel or thinking it is too think.

I was worried about the sweetness with 2.4g/100ml of added sugar and if you go looking for it you can taste it a bit sweet, especially at the end. However, i think if you didn’t know it was reasonably high in sugar you might not know. They have wrapped the sugar around a decent structure here and get away with it

The sugar and big flavours combine to make this quite beer like indeed. I would compare it to San Miguel 0.0 (review here) and think they are pretty similar.

The Verdict

Another decent Spanish alcohol free pilsner here. The Europeans can make a beer. Its slightly higher in calories than i would aim for but they carry it off with big malty flavours and it is certainly enjoyable.

The Score

7.5/10 – Solid malty pilsner you should definitely try.

Is it safe to drink Estrella Galicia 0.0 when pregnant?

Estrella Galicia 0.0 has only a trace amount of alcohol which is metabolised immediately. It is therefore completely safe in pregnancy. I have written a full article about non alcoholic drinks and breastfeeding here.

Lots of fruit juices have considerably more alcohol in them and you wouldn’t consider them unsafe. I have a full review of alcohol in common foods here, some of it is very surprising!

Does Estrella Galicia 0.0 get you drunk?

No, you can not get drunk drinking Estrella Galicia 0.0

I have spent a lot of time working out how much of a 0.05% ABV liquid you would need to get drunk here

In general you aren’t going to be able to get drunk from non alcoholic (<0.5% ABV) beer and it is impossible to get drunk from alcohol free (0.0%) beer.

The sheer volume of liquid you would need to drink to get enough alcohol in your body to shift your blood alcohol level up enough just isn’t possible. So you can drink as much as you want and never get drunk.

Can you drink Estrella Galicia 0.0 and drive?

You might be a bit more cautious when thinking if you can drive after an alcohol free beer like Estrella Galicia 0.0. Being drunk is one thing but driving the kids about is another.

More of my working out is…

You can reasonably drink up to 400 bottles of 12 fl oz alcohol free beer (<0.05% ABV) without increasing your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit of 0.08%.

There is just no way you can even drink a fraction of that.

If you want to have 5 beers and drive home, your blood alcohol level will likely not have changed at all from when you started. You are completely safe to drive.

Is Estrella Galicia 0.0 halal?

As a beer that contains zero alcoholic i think Estrella Galicia 0.0 can be considered as halal.

As a general rule, alcohol free beer can be Halal. The beer needs to be 0.0% ABV for the strict Islamic Law to deem it Halal. Nearly all the major beer brands are producing zero alcohol beers.

Not all non or low alcoholic beers are 0.0%, meaning it is critical to read the label.

I have written extensively about if alcohol free beer is halal and you can read my article here

Is Estrella Galicia 0.0 gluten free?

Estrella Galicia 0.0 is not gluten free as it contains barley. There are gluten free version of Estrella Galicia but this is not one of them.

I have an entire article on non alcoholic beers and gluten if you want more information.

Is Estrella Galicia 0.0 vegan?

Yes. This is confirmed by the company.

For more on vegan beers see my article on the matter. Why beers may or may not be and how to check.

Review Overview

Another decent Spanish alcohol free pilsner here. The Europeans can make a beer. Its slightly higher in calories than i would aim for but they carry it off with big malty flavours and it is certainly enjoyable.
