Clausthaler Grapefruit is a shandy

A shandy is a mix of beer and a citrus drink. It is usually a lemon on lime drink and often carbonated like a lemonade.

In this case the shandy is a 50/50 mix of Clausthaler non alcoholic beer and a grapefruit drink.

Clausthaler is a German brand so could easily have used the German terminology, radler, to describe this drink.

There is a difference in a fruit beer vs a shandy. A fruit beer is basically a beer with maybe 1-2% fruit added whereas a shandy is only 50% beer and 50% fruit drink.

The Ingredients

So what goes into a shandy? It is the combination of 2 different drinks so i would expect 2 different ingredients.

Clausthaler Grapefruit includes…

Non alcoholic beer– water, barley malt, hop extract, fermentation carbon dioxide

Grapefruit drink – water grapefruit drink from concentrate, sugar, lemon juice from concentrate, orange juice from concentrate, carbon dioxide, lemon and orange extract

Coloured with beta carotene

The beer portion is pretty much standard and i imagine they just use their Clausthaler Original rather than the much better Unfiltered Dry Hopped as the base.

The grapefruit drink portion actually includes plenty of additional orange and lemon for additional citrus and they have carbonated it.

The Nutrition

You would imagine a shandy is reasonably calorific and high in sugar. To combat all the tart citrus, a lot of sugar is usually added, think of it as half full fat lemonade.

And yes, this certainly packs a punch in terms of added sugar. I would think this will end up tasing very sweet but hopefully the acidic citrus fruits can level it off.

This certainly would not be one of the non alcoholic beers you reach for if you were off alcohol for the calorie savings.

The Look

They’ve gone for a clear bottle to showcase the pinky orange colour of the beer. A combination of the grapefruit and beta carotene. You would be under no illusions at to what you are buying here.

The Aroma

The smell is of a very sweet, grapefruit and citrus mix. You won’t be able to pick out any actual beer smells here I think. Unless you have a massive nose!

The Taste

I suppose it does taste like a grapefruit lemonade shandy or just pure grapefruit lemonade really.

There are no beer flavours to be had but then again I probably didn’t expect any.

The grapefruit flavour is pretty strong but the lemon and to lesser degree orange come in and drive it to a more middle of the road citrus flavour than just pure grapefruit.

It is very sweet and I cant imagine having more than one of these.

Trying to benchmark it verus other fruit beers and in particular grapefruit beers, I would say this is a cut below the Erdinger Grapefruit I had. It tasted more beer like and the wheat beer element really helped it.

Clausthaler have made a decent drink, it’s just you’d rather just by a fizzy lemonade at a fraction of the price

My wife tried this one and thought it tasted off a childhood medicine. I don’t think that was meant as a glowing compliment.

It doesn’t struggle with body or mouthfeel but the mouthfeel ends up too sweet and they aftertaste it clawingly sweet vs the Erdinger for some reason

The Verdict

Not my favourite fruit beer ive ever had. The shandy 50/50 mix made it less beer like and more lemonade like. I think at that point id rather just buy a lemonade.

The Score

6.5/10 – A very fruity and sweet drink, non beer drinkers would porbably like it as it doesn’t taste like a beer.
