The new kid on the alcohol market is the hard seltzer. They boast great flavours but with only 100kcal a 12fl oz can. But how do theses fit with the Optavia diet, can you drink hard seltzers on the Optavia diet?

All alcohol is not recommended on the Optavia diet due to its poor nutritional value and relatively high calorie count. However, hard seltzers are one of the lowest calorie and carb alcoholic drinks so if you really can’t do without an alcoholic drink, they would be a great option in moderation.

What is the best alcohol to drink on Optavia diet?
As stated above, alcohol is not recommended but if you really must then the best options are the lowest calorie and lowest carb versions.
This would usually mean just a straight spirit with no mixer, however this can be unpalatable for most people.
A standard hard seltzer will have exactly the same amount of alcohol as a shot of vodka, 14g of pure alcohol, but will have 2g of carbs per 12fl oz can. This brings up the overall calorie count to 100kcal for a 12fl oz can.
So as you can see, a hard seltzer is very nearly a best in class alcoholic drink if you have to drink one.
How many calories are in beer?
A standard beer has 153kcal in a 12fl oz serving and 12.6g of carbs in a 12fl oz serving. This puts beer on a far higher calorie and carb level than a hard seltzer so you can see the hard seltzers are a much better option if you are limiting your calorie intake.
How many hard seltzers to get drunk?
One of the things to avoid when drinking alcohol on the Optavia diet is getting drunk. This would mean you have drank quite a lot of calories and are at higher risk of bad snacking and food choices.
So how many hard seltzers does it take to get drunk?
The CDC states it takes the average 160lb adult male, 4 standard beers to get drunk. A standard beer is 12fl oz and 5% ABV which is the same as a Hard Seltzer. The 4 Hard Seltzers have to be drank over 1-2 hours. If you are a female or lighter then it will take less Hard Seltzers, if you are a significantly heavier male, it may take 5+ Hard Seltzers to get drunk.
