Can Peroni Libera Get You Drunk? How many would it take?

Alcohol free beer is going from strength to strength. Sales are on a nice upward trajectory and every big brand and brewery now has an alcohol free equivalent of their biggest beer. However, one of the big questions anyone new to the sector is asking is “how many Peroni Libera to get drunk?”

It might seem like a simple question but there are no simple questions. Alcohol free beers taste, look and are promoted like alcoholic beers so unless you take some time out to think about it, you might not be aware of how much alcohol is actually in one.

How many Peroni Libera to get drunk?

The CDC average 160lb adult male needs to drink x4 12fl oz cans of 5% ABV beer to get drunk. x100 0.05% ABV alcohol free beers equals one standard 5% beer so you would need to drink x400 Peroni Libera to get drunk. These would have to be drank over a 1-2 hr period as your body is constantly breaking down the alcohol you have already drank.

How much alcohol is in alcohol free beer (Peroni Libera)?

Peroni libera beer i bought and drank for this review

Peroni Libera is what is known as an alcohol free beer.

Knowing what “alcohol free” or “non alcoholic” can be difficult if you have never encountered it before. In the US and the UK, a beer labelled as “alcohol free” should have less than 0.05% alcohol by volume

The labelling can be confusing along with the terminology. In the EU, they are allowed to label 0.5% beers as “alcohol free” and not “non alcoholic” just to keep you on your toes.

I have written a full article on labelling of non alcoholic beer, which you can read here

There are a few interesting reasons why a brewery might choose to brew a 0.05% beer or a 0.5% one. I have discussed all the options here. As with most things in life, it tends to come down to cost and public relations.

What a standard beer?

Before you work out how many alcohol free beers such as Peroni Libera you need to drink to get drunk, you have to consider how many regular beers it would take. To do that you have to have a value for a generic, alcoholic beer, which isn’t easy.

Luckily the USDA have done this. They have defined a standard beer as having 5% alcohol by volume and a fluid volume of 12fl oz.

This makes the calculations nice and easy as we can assume an alcohol free beer has an ABV of 0.05%, meaning there is a factor of 100 difference.

They get the “standard” of the standard beer because 12fl oz of 5% alcohol will give you 14g of alcohol (0.6 ounces). You can then use this amount of alcohol to work out the volume needed of wine or spirits to have give the same alcohol.

Below is a list of the standard drinks, volumes and ABV that all give 14g of alcohol.

How many Peroni Libera equals one beer?

An alcohol free beer like Peroni Libera has <0.05% alcohol by volume and an alcoholic beer (according to the USDA) has 5% alcohol by volume.

Therefore, you would need to drink 100 Peroni Libera of the same volume to equal one alcoholic beer of the same volume (in terms of alcohol).

What is the legal definition of “drunk”?

To begin to work out how many beers is needed to get you drunk, you need to know what “drunk” actually is. How is is defined or measured?

A blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% is classed as legally intoxicated in the US.

What will you be feeling with a BAC of just slightly less or more than the magic figure of 0.08%?

What is blood alcohol concentration and what happens as it rises?

As you drink more alcohol than your liver can metabolise, your BAC rises. The effects of a rising blood alcohol concentration has been tracked by many studies

Lots of informational websites include this data now.

  • 0.02% – Probably the lowest measurable BAC where you can track any brain issues. You may feel more relaxed and potentially make poorer decisions.
  • 0.05%: When you hit this BAC, your behaviour will may become over exaggerated. Speak louder and gesturing more are common. You may also begin to lose control of small muscles like the ones that control your eyes leading to blurry vision.
  • 0.08%: This is the current legal driving limit in the U.S and many areas around the world. It is also the legal definition of intoxicated in the US. You will likely lose some coordination, so your reaction times, speech, balance, and even hearing will deteriorate.
  • 0.10%: As we reach this BAC, reaction times and control will be reduced further. Your speech will be slurred, you think slower, and your coordination becomes poor.
  • 0.15%: Getting up to twice the legal driving limit now. You will have much less control over your balance and voluntary muscles. We have all seen someone who finds walking and talking difficult after a lot of alcohol. Falling and injuring yourself is a real possibility now.

How many alcoholic beers to get drunk?

We are making progress now. How many alcoholic beers does the average adult need to drink to get to a BAC of 0.08% and drunk under the law?

The CDC tells us that the average 160lb adult male will need to drink 4 standard drinks, in the case beers, to get to a BAC of 0.08%.

Lots of things affect how quickly your BAC may rise. Age, sex, weight, overall health and your past drinking experience or tolerance to alcohol can all play massive parts. It’s then quite difficult to fully generalise across a whole population

We can continue to use the CDC 160lb adult male and his 4 standard drinks to get drunk.

How many Peroni Libera to get drunk?

If if takes 4 standard beers to get drunk and 100 alcohol free beers equals one standard beer, you will therefore need an extraordinary 400 Peroni Libera to get you drunk.

Over how long would you need to drink them?

The kicker is the fact you need to drink these 400 Peroni Libera over a certain time frame. As soon as you start drinking the alcohol and it gets into you blood then moves to the liver, it gets broken down.

You therefore have a strictly limited amount of time to drink the 400 Peroni Libera. Around 2 hours in and your liver will have be gaining the upper hand and you will need to drink an even more ludicrous number of Peroni Libera.

This leads us nicely to the last question…

Can you get drunk drinking Peroni Libera?

Can you get drunk drinking Peroni Libera?

To get drunk, you need to drink x400 12fl oz bottles of Peroni Libera in less than 2 hrs.

This equals 4800fl oz of Peroni Libera, 35 gallons of Peroni Libera or 142 litres of Peroni Libera in 2hours.

Another way to look at it is you will have to drink x1 12fl oz bottle of Peroni Libera every 18 seconds, for 2 hours, to get drunk.

It is impossible to drink this amount of fluid in 2 hours so it is impossible to get drunk on Peroni Libera.
