What is a standard gin?

Gin can come in various strengths and sizes. There is no point in me saying “standard gin” and you imagining some 43% Export gin when i mean a 37.5% supermarket own brand.

Luckily for us, the USDA have devised a list of “standard” alcoholic drinks. Each one contains the exact same amount of alcohol – 14g of alcohol (0.6 ounces).

Below is a list of the standard drinks, volumes and ABV that all give 14g of alcohol.

Drink and volumeAlcohol content
12fl oz Beer5%
5fl oz Wine12%
1.5fl oz Spirit40%
Standard Drinks

So as you can see, a standard gin is a 1.5fl oz glass and 40% alcohol by volume.

What is the legal definition of “drunk”?

Now we know what a standard gin is, we need to know how to scientifically judge what “drunk” is under the law. It isn’t just when you forget where you live.

A blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% is classed as legally intoxicated in the US.

So lastly, we now need to see how many standard drinks would get your BAC to 0.08%.

How many standard measures of gin to get drunk?

How many alcoholic gins does the average adult need to drink to get to a BAC of 0.08% and drunk under the law?

The CDC tells us that the average 160lb adult male will need to drink 4 standard drinks, in this case gin, to get to a BAC of 0.08%.

The answer is therefore, it would take 4 standard gins to get drunk. These need to be drank over 1-2 hours however, as your liver will start metabolising the alcohol as soon as it is transported to it via the blood.

How many non alcoholic gins equals one gin?

The next step in working out if you can get drunk on non alcoholic gin is to see how many non alcoholic gins equals one alcoholic wine.

I have dedicated a full article to it here

A non alcoholic gin has 0.5% ABV and an alcoholic gin has 40% alcohol by volume.

Therefore, you would need to drink 80 measures of non alcoholic gin of the same volume to equal one alcoholic gin of the same volume. The math is 40/0.5 = 80.

How many alcohol free gins equals one gin?

The math is just as easy for alcohol free gins.

An alcohol free gin will have less than 0.05% ABV compared to 0.5% for a non alcoholic gin so to keep things easy, let’s us the 0.05% number.

You would need to drink 800 measures of alcohol free gin of the same volume to equal one alcoholic gin of the same volume (in terms of alcohol).

How many non alcoholic gins to get drunk?

To get drunk on non alcoholic gin you have to drink x80 the amount of standard alcohol gin.

Again, this has to be over a relatively short time period.
