Bitburger is a German classic.
What type of beer is Bitburger Drive 0.0%?
Bitburger Drive 0.0% is a pilsner
This means it has a light straw to golden colour with more bitter or earthy taste. Basically a bit more depth of flavour and hops than a regular lager.
I much prefer the added hops in a pilsner vs a lager. The days with IPAs and DIPAs, i can find a lager a bit bland but usually a decent pilsner has enough going on for me.
As a German beer it should have just the big 4 (water, barley, hops and yeast) to conform to the German Purity Laws, does it?
These are the ingredients…
- Malted Barley
- Hop extract
I think that counts! No “natural flavourings” etc and you just know what you are getting, a clean, crisp beer. Lovely.
The next big section to consider before tasting is just what those ingredients add up to. You don’t want a hugely sweet beer or a really calorific one either.

Interesting indeed. Not the worst calories, normal to mildly raised carbs but 0 added sugar. I like the look of that.
0g of sugar with a pure German pilsner should really be an open goal shouldn’t it?!
Is Bitburger Drive 0.0% really alcohol free?
Bitburger Drive 0.0% is indeed alcohol free. It has an alcohol content lower than 0.05% which classes as alcoholic free.
Labelling in the non alcoholic and alcohol free world are very confusing, with different countries having different rules.
You can read my entire article on how to tell how much alcohol is in a non alcoholic beer here
There is quite a lot going on on the bottle. I sort of looks too busy and crowded but the gold and red make it pop on brown glass.
The beer itself is a golden amber, a shade or 2 darker than a lager would be.
Nice, there is a light hoppy smell. It’s a clean smell but no cheap wort, sugar notes you get in sweet cheap beer. Again a good sign.
Everything has pointed to this being good and well, it is!
There is plenty of flavour right out of the gun. I got loads of bitter hops and malted barley. A little strangely i feel i get a wheat beer type freshness even though there is no wheat! Why is that?
It certainly is not sweet tasting. The mouthfeel is all there, nice and round and full. All in all, a brilliant classic German pilsner.
You wouldn’t know this is non alcoholic and maybe one of the best first beers or someone starting into alcohol free beer.
This has way more going on that basically any of the alcohol free lagers and if you had the choice, you need this pilsner unless a hardened lager only drinker.
Now I get the quite bitter notes or pseudo wheat taste might not be to everyones cup of tea but I think its pretty decent.
One thing is for sure tho, no one is trying this and saying it is empty, thin or fizzy water, there is plenty going on.
This is a stand out beer for me, in fact i’ve already sort of reviewed it as part of Oktoberfest Frei. You can read my review of 8 German non alcoholic beers here
9/10. Last time i gave this 9.5/10 so this is a slight drop. Not much tho. Ive drank a lot more non alcoholic beers since but this is still one of the best. I dropped it because i think the slight wheat taste (no wheat in there!) might put some off.
