Are Trulys Good For Beginners? A double edged sword.

The brand new and hugely popular sector of the alcoholic drinks market is the “hard seltzers”. They are based of seltzer water with alcohol added (the “hard” bit in hard seltzer). They come in all sorts of flavours and are very low in carbs and calories. To be honest, you can barely taste the alcohol in them. Does this mean hard seltzers like one of the market leaders, Truly are good for new drinkers? Are Trulys good for beginners?

Are Trulys Good For Beginners?

Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The S...
Does Non Alcoholic Beer Taste The Same

Trulys can be both good and bad for beginner drinkers. The alcohol is barely tasted and the flavours are tasty so Trulys are easily drank by anyone. However this can mean you drink too much without any understanding of your alcohol tolerance or when you might have had enough alcohol.

To investigate this further we should see just exactly how much alcohol is in a Truly, what that equals in comparison to other alcoholic drinks and then what all this means for a beginner drinker.

What type of alcohol is in a Truly?

The alcoholic base in Truly Hard Seltzer is a pure spirit which is distilled from sugar cane. Sugar cane is not an unusual base for a spirit, it is classically used in rum, but will initially make a pure and flavourless alcohol to mix with the seltzer flavours.

Most of the new breed of hard seltzers are based off a sugar cane distillation. Topo Chico  and White Claw are the only products with a different base. White Claw from corn and Topo Chico from agave.

How much alcohol is in a Truly?

A Truly has 5% alcohol by volume which means in a standard 12fl oz can, there will be 14g of pure alcohol.

To put this into more context, you need to know how this compares to various other alcoholic drinks so you can get a better understanding.

How many Trulys equals a beer?

In terms of alcohol and volume, Truly is exactly the same as a standard beer. They both are 12fl oz in volume and 5% alcohol by volume.

So drinking one Truly is the same as drinking a Budweiser. You might not realise this when you are drinking one.

How many Trulys equals a shot of vodka?

A 12fl oz 5% ABV Truly has the same alcohol (14g of pure alcohol), as a 1.5fl oz shot of 40% vodka.

So the answer is 1 Truly is equal to one shot of vodka or any spirit at 40% ABV. This might be surprising but you would probably drink a shot a vodka a bit faster than a Truly.

How many Trulys equals a glass of wine?

As for the shots of spirits and beer above, there is a standard glass of wine.

Below is a list of the standard drinks, volumes and ABV that all give 14g of alcohol.

Drink and volumeAlcohol content
12fl oz Beer5%
5fl oz Wine12%
1.5fl oz Spirit40%
Standard Drinks

This means that a Truly is also the same in terms of alcohol as a glass of wine. The glass of wine would be 12% ABV and 5fl oz.

How many Trulys equals a bottle of wine?

5 Truly Hard Seltzers equals one bottle of standard wine. A Truly is 5% ABV and 12fl oz. A standard bottle of wine is 750ml or 25fl oz and 12% ABV. That means they both provide 70g of pure alcohol.

I would guess most people would know or think they would be drunk after drinking a full bottle of wine but would they think the same after 5 Trulys? Even tho it is the same amount of alcohol? I dont think so.

How many Trulys to get drunk?

The CDC states it takes the average 160lb adult male, 4 standard beers to get drunk. A standard beer is 12fl oz and 5% ABV which is the same as a Truly. The 4 Trulys have to be drank over 1-2 hours. If you are a female or lighter then it will take less Trulys, if you are a significantly heavier male, it may take 5+ Trulys to get drunk.

It doesn’t take many Trulys to get drunk and if you have ever drank them, you know that you could easily drink 5 of them in a sitting without realising the alcohol involved.

Can you taste the alcohol in Truly?

At only 5% ABV, a Truly isn’t really alcoholic enough to get you that alcohol kick in the back of your throat.

They come in a variety of flavours which are great tasting but also taste quite strongly of their flavour like mango and pineapple. Consequently, you can barely taste the alcohol in a Truly, if at all.

If you cant taste the alcohol in a Truly, is that good for a beginner?

The answer to this, rather unhelpfully is…. it depends.

If you are a beginner drinker and what to sample something alcoholic or what to drink something alcoholic with friends then a hard seltzer like a Truly is a great option. This certainly applies if you are only wanting a few drinks. The problems come if, as a beginner drinker, you drink 4 or more.

As Trulys don’t really taste alcoholic, you can drink them easily and pretty quick. As we have seen above, each Truly is the same as a beer, a shot or a glass of wine and it only takes 4 Trulys to get drunk.

As a beginner, you may not know how to pace yourself, what starting to be drunk feels like or your alcohol tolerance. This means that there is a danger of getting too drunk or drunk quickly just because if seems like you are drinking a non alcoholic soft drink.
